It is also called "Daruma with protruding eyes",
medashi Daruma 目だしダルマ
目だしだるま

me dashi, a play on words for "me ga deru", to have good luck.

芽が出る、目が出る
me ga deru ... also in gambling (ME is the word for the "eyes" on the dice).

Daruma san is also often used as o-mamori, even in the version with his eyes popping out as a sign of extra good luck.

This is one I got from a temple in Shikoku.


ME GA DERU is a kind of pun with words, well loved by the people of Edo.
