Daruma Clay Bells どれい【土鈴】 dorei
an earthen (ware) bell, a ceramic bell

Clay bells started of as toys for children, but since the Meiji period they came to be a well-loved souvenir for travelling families and groups of ladies. You find them in the local souvenir shops and at most temples and shrines throughout Japan.
Their different types vary from area to area, from maker to maker, and certainly from different
tastes within the changing periods of Japanese history. A lot of the clay bells come from the Kyoto area, but there are also some splendid ones from the various provinces of Japan.

The best introduction to the subject is probably found in the detailed book "Clay Bells in Japan" by Mrs. Ishiyama Kuniko.

Museum about Japanese Clay Bells
Nihon Dorei Kan 日本土鈴館

The history of clay bells (dorei 土鈴) dates back to the Jomon period (B.C. 7000 - 300); their quiet tinkling and plain shape have attractedthe hearts of the Japanese people. Infused with a variety of hopes by different individuals, the clay bell and its timbre has deeply penetrated into our daily lives. Clay bells infuse a feeling of nostalgia in the Japanese people and provide us a pleasant sensation.

Tsuyazaki in Kyushu is located close to Hakata with its famous clay dolls, which we will explore in another story. The Tsuyazaki clay dolls are more simple and more like children's toys. The late Mr. Harada Misaemon was famous for this Daruma bells. Now his wife Takayo still makes some smaller ones.
